Summary

Librarian Note: Alternate cover edition can be found here

When Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home and quality time with the man she hopes to marry。 But Nick has failed to give his girlfriend a few key details。 One, that his childhood home looks like a palace; two, that he grew up riding in more private planes than cars; and three, that he just happens to be the country’s most eligible bachelor。

On Nick’s arm, Rachel may as well have a target on her back the second she steps off the plane, and soon, her relaxed vacation turns into an obstacle course of old money, new money, nosy relatives, and scheming social climbers。

A little over-the-top, but fun。 Immediately moving onto the next book in this series!

Most characters were so annoying (except for Astrid’s ex he’s cool), and there was way to little commentary on the disgustingly selfish and harmful hoarding of wealth, not to mention the classism and a hundred more toxic and destructive attitudes displayed toward each other and the less wealthy。 I also hate the very obvious bias the author has toward China; this book seriously describes Singapore like it is superior in every way and no place in the world could ever dare to compete, especially Am Most characters were so annoying (except for Astrid’s ex he’s cool), and there was way to little commentary on the disgustingly selfish and harmful hoarding of wealth, not to mention the classism and a hundred more toxic and destructive attitudes displayed toward each other and the less wealthy。 I also hate the very obvious bias the author has toward China; this book seriously describes Singapore like it is superior in every way and no place in the world could ever dare to compete, especially America。 The propaganda is just so blatant。 I could seriously go on a MUCH longer rant on the issues of glorifying Asian aristocracy, but it’s not worth it。 TL;DR: EAT THE RICH 。。。more

This book is tremendously fun。 Both hilariously absurd and surprisingly real, I laughed and felt for the characters。 I had seen the movie several times already and was pleased to find that the book had similar energy。 I enjoyed getting more story from some of the characters, especially Astrid and Nick。 They are both characters who I could root for, but who were also deeply flawed。 The conniving and gossiping relatives also felt, unfortunately, very real。 When Rachel started meeting the extended This book is tremendously fun。 Both hilariously absurd and surprisingly real, I laughed and felt for the characters。 I had seen the movie several times already and was pleased to find that the book had similar energy。 I enjoyed getting more story from some of the characters, especially Astrid and Nick。 They are both characters who I could root for, but who were also deeply flawed。 The conniving and gossiping relatives also felt, unfortunately, very real。 When Rachel started meeting the extended family at the initial party, it was so funny and perfect, the first thing I thought was *this* is how you write meeting a large and crazy family。I’m looking forward to finding out what is in store in book 2! 。。。more

The book provides more details about these interesting characters and places, of course。 The movie is a good adaptation, although with a lighter mood。 Kevin Kwan gives a bit harsher reality of classism and male/female roles in Singapore and Chinese culture。 I listened to this book while on a road trip with my friend and her daughter。 On their recommendation because they loved the movie。 We watched the movie the last night of our trip。 It was fun seeing how the characters were imagined by the fil The book provides more details about these interesting characters and places, of course。 The movie is a good adaptation, although with a lighter mood。 Kevin Kwan gives a bit harsher reality of classism and male/female roles in Singapore and Chinese culture。 I listened to this book while on a road trip with my friend and her daughter。 On their recommendation because they loved the movie。 We watched the movie the last night of our trip。 It was fun seeing how the characters were imagined by the film makers。 The story has more depth than I initially imagined。 Lynn Chen is an amazing narrator, giving each character and situation a strong voice。 Well done! I not only liked this interestingly juicy book, But I also was reminded from time to time of prince Harry & Megan 😅

This just isn't for me。 It's so drawn out。 I get that we're being hit over the head with labels and price tags to show how the characters feel being bombarded with it。 But it really crossed the line from being about vapid people to just being a lengthy, boring, vapid work itself。 This is for someone else, though I can't think of who。 I may try the movie, but I think I'm finished with these books。 This just isn't for me。 It's so drawn out。 I get that we're being hit over the head with labels and price tags to show how the characters feel being bombarded with it。 But it really crossed the line from being about vapid people to just being a lengthy, boring, vapid work itself。 This is for someone else, though I can't think of who。 I may try the movie, but I think I'm finished with these books。 。。。more

It is impossible for me to give this an unbiased review because I love this movie so much, but I do think this is a rare situation where the movie was more enjoyable than the books。 I’m glad I saw it before reading this — because I enjoyed it more AND it was easier to keep track of all the characters。 There were some changes in the movie, I actually think a lot of them for the better。 I found myself skipping through chapters of certain people because I just didn’t care。 I think I’ll watch the mo It is impossible for me to give this an unbiased review because I love this movie so much, but I do think this is a rare situation where the movie was more enjoyable than the books。 I’m glad I saw it before reading this — because I enjoyed it more AND it was easier to keep track of all the characters。 There were some changes in the movie, I actually think a lot of them for the better。 I found myself skipping through chapters of certain people because I just didn’t care。 I think I’ll watch the movie again before rereading this but still a fun read! This books is wonderfully over the top。 I'd heard that it was satire and romance, and I couldn't help but wonder how that works。。。 until I read it myself。First of all, this reads like wealth porn - these people have it all, from jewels and fashion to state-of-the-art homes。 There are maids, there are cooks, there are bodyguards and private jets and yachts and everything you can imagine, then more。 They're filthy rich, and, to be honest, reading about can be enjoyable。 Look at all the things mone This books is wonderfully over the top。 I'd heard that it was satire and romance, and I couldn't help but wonder how that works。。。 until I read it myself。First of all, this reads like wealth porn - these people have it all, from jewels and fashion to state-of-the-art homes。 There are maids, there are cooks, there are bodyguards and private jets and yachts and everything you can imagine, then more。 They're filthy rich, and, to be honest, reading about can be enjoyable。 Look at all the things money can buy!But there are things money can't buy, like basic human decency。The crazy rich society in Singapore is petty, shallow, mean, snobbish, and more on top。 They're simply gilded cockroaches, but cockroaches they are: buying counterfeit purses indistinguishable from originals, fighting over free couture dresses, holding petty grudges and trying to outdo one another, forming cliques and looking up to those they consider to be the most important of them。 Obsessed with money and position, they talk about little else。Rachel Chu is a young woman, economist, phD, the daughter of a single mother who emigrated to the USA shortly after Rachel was born。 She met and fell in love with Nick Young, a handsome, polite, well-mannered Chinese Singaporean man who invites her to Singapore to attend the wedding of his best friend and meet his parents。Rachel is far, far from prepared for meeting his family and circle from back home - not just because they're all filthy rich, but because they're mean and petty to an incredible degree。 They dig up her past and pick it apart with all the hatred they can muster, they never waste a moment making her feel unwelcome, someone takes "The Godfather" as a bit of an inspiration, and little effort is spared in the attempt to make her go away and never return, so Rachel's going from one "what the fuck" to another, while Nick is oblivious because the vipers he grew up around were always nice to him。This book was nuts and I loved it。 It's a caricature of rich people, but sometimes, I swear to god, it rings so fucking true。 The only real problems are getting lost in the whole cast of characters, the little characterization and the ending that's not very clear on what happens next and how the mountain of issues will be resolved。 。。。more

This was a fun one about uber rich people behaving badly。 It's funny, outrageous, and over the top in the best way。 It took a second to get used to the rampant head-hopping, but it was written in such a way that it never bothered me。 I enjoyed learning about Singapore。 I don't think I've ever read a book that takes place there before。 It made me want to visit just to try the food! I love-hate all of the characters in this book。 The drama, romance, pettiness, and extravagance of every scene made it easy and fun to read。

Patiešām izklaidējošs Pelnrušķītes stāsts。 Atšķirībā no visiem zināmās pasakas - Pelnrušķīte un princis jau ir satikušies ASV, bet viņa nenojaušs, ka burvīgais partneris patiešām ir princis。 No ļoti turīgas karaļvalsts (Singapūras)。 No bezjēgā bagātas ģimenes (diskrētas un diezgan noslēpumainas)。 Princis sajūtas gatavs iepazīstināt Pelnrušķīti ar savu ģimeni, bet nevar saņemt dūšu viņai pastāstīt par to, kas viņu sagaida Singapūrā。 Visticamāk tādēļ, ka viņam nav ne jausmas。 Patiešām, visos šāda Patiešām izklaidējošs Pelnrušķītes stāsts。 Atšķirībā no visiem zināmās pasakas - Pelnrušķīte un princis jau ir satikušies ASV, bet viņa nenojaušs, ka burvīgais partneris patiešām ir princis。 No ļoti turīgas karaļvalsts (Singapūras)。 No bezjēgā bagātas ģimenes (diskrētas un diezgan noslēpumainas)。 Princis sajūtas gatavs iepazīstināt Pelnrušķīti ar savu ģimeni, bet nevar saņemt dūšu viņai pastāstīt par to, kas viņu sagaida Singapūrā。 Visticamāk tādēļ, ka viņam nav ne jausmas。 Patiešām, visos šāda sižeta stāstos vīrietis, princis ir tāda naivgosniņa, kas nevar pat iedomāties, ar kādiem šķēršļiem jāsaskaras viņa mīļotajai sievietei。 Vēl jo vairāk - kādus šķēršļus rada viņa ģimene un draugi, un "draugi"。 Vēl jo vairāk - nezinu, vai tā ir mīlestība, kas "princi" padarījusi tik aklu - viņš pat nevar iedomāties, ka, piemēram, drēbju izvēle, satiekot Singapūras augstākās aprindas, varētu padarīt viņa mīļoto par izsmiekla objektu。 Absolūta ignorance。 Svētlaimīga ignorance līdz pat beigām, kad šīs cukurattiecības man beidzot sāka likties patiesas。 Kompliments autoram arī par to, ka viņš nav izvēlējies iet vieglāko ceļu, piemēram, kādā mirklī pavēršot "princi" (man tiešām slinkums meklēt, vai viņš bija Nikijs vai Nikolass, vai Niks) pret savu mīļoto Reičelu。 Tieši Reičela bija tā, kas pieņem skarbo lēmumu uzupurēt savu mīlestību mierīgākas, cilvēcīgākas un viņai pieņemamākas nākotnes vārdā。 Visu cieņu。 Tāpat arī novērtēju Astrīdas un viņas vīra Maikla attiecību līniju - kas notiek, kad cilvēks vairs nav godīgs pats pret sevi。 Kopumā esmu pārsteigta, cik ļoti man patika grāmata, varbūt atkal notrāpīja īstajā mirklī, kad gribas aizbēgt no ikdienas reālijām。 Ak, jā。 Ņemot vērā manu tendenci ieslīgt grāmatu pasaulēs diezgan dziļi, izsaku līdzjūtību mīļotajam, kurš vēl kādu laiku būs spiests dzirdēt jautājumus, kad tad mēs paceļosim pa Indonēzijas salām un kad viņš beidzot nopirks to pārdesmit tūkstoš eiro vērto kleitu, ko esmu noskatījusi。 Plānoju lasīt arī nākamās daļas, kas esot vēl trakākas un bagātākas, tā kā droši vien jautājumu krāšņums tikai pieaugs。 3。5, apaļoju uz augšu, jo pēdējā laikā ļoti novērtēju izklaidi。 。。。more

Oh。 My。 Gosh。 This book was so fabulous! Between the drama and romance, I couldn't put it down! It was so cool reading about the culture too in the footnotes and learning a few words here and there。 I highly recommend reading this book; especially if you already saw the movie! Be warned though, there are a lot of characters and the family tree in the front of the book will be your best friend throughout the story。 Oh。 My。 Gosh。 This book was so fabulous! 3。5 stars。 Rachel is going to spend the summer with her boyfriend Nick's family in Singapore, but she goes in complete chock when she realize he's family is super rich。 It was fun and had a ton of drama to keep me somewhat entertained but it was a tad to fluffy for me。 Didn't connect deeply with the characters but the book was fun and a lot of intruige。 Little like a reality show but with more charm。 Entertaining but not a new favourite。 Liked the ending though when we get Rachel's mom's story, 3。5 stars。 Rachel is going to spend the summer with her boyfriend Nick's family in Singapore, but she goes in complete chock when she realize he's family is super rich。 It was fun and had a ton of drama to keep me somewhat entertained but it was a tad to fluffy for me。 Didn't connect deeply with the characters but the book was fun and a lot of intruige。 Little like a reality show but with more charm。 Entertaining but not a new favourite。 Liked the ending though when we get Rachel's mom's story, so sad and strong 。。。more

I’ve had this on my shelf。。。。。。forever!I read it then I watched the adaptation on Netflix。Such a great story。 Boy meets girl, girl doesn’t fit into the rich Singapore Chinese way of life because she was raised an American。Lots of backbiting and rumours abound。Bit of comical dialogue thrown it, sadness and determination。A lovely read。I might go on to book 2 soon。

Rosie Bloomfield

I found the dialogue in this book to be quite unnatural and unrealistic, which put me off a bit, but dispite that I enjoyed the story。

Really fun book。 Compulsively readable and great characters。 Very pulpy and full of sumptuous descriptions of places and food。 Looking forward to reading the next one!

This book highlights the superficial life of the super rich。 To me, there was repeated emphasis on designer clothes and designer foods and opulent home decor and not enough development of the characters。 Also, there was a definite lack of completion in the story, especially for the characters of Rachel, Nick, and Astrid。 Was is an open door for a planned sequel?

Joanna Heintz Myers

Very enjoyable read。
